Helena Citronova (right) eventually fell in love with SS guard Franz Wunsch (left) at the Nazi concentration camp in Poland(inset). He saved her and her sister Rozinka from going to the gas chamber, claiming 'desire changed my brutal behaviour'. He was acquitted of all charges at a war crimes trial in Vienna in 1972, during which the sisters came evidence in his favour. A recent romance novel with a similar fictional plotline called For Such A Time by Kate Breslin has been slated by critics, who claim it 'demeans the atrocities of the Holocaust'.
