A new book Colonization after Emancipation reveals Lincoln's complex and controversial stance on race.
Abraham Lincoln's post emancipation advice to blacks was to resettle in Central America, a region well suited in temperature being similar to their native Africa. The purpose as he saw it was their opportunity to build a society as grand and self-determining as their white counterpart.
I agree with him ... the development of race independence would have been indisputably positive. Before the onset of civil rights reform and desegregation, black social groups and initiatives sought to uplift and create solid associations among themselves. The ideas and solidarity that resulted were pure gold until they were forcibly undone by white society or otherwise frittered away.
The experience would have been entirely different but in a good way, if only.

George III bought Buckingham House in 1761 to be a home for his wife Charlotte - 14 of his 15 offspring were born there. A series of remodeling projects began in 1762, initially on the King's orders and later by his son, George IV on his 1820 accession. The remodeled State and semi-State rooms today are unchanged since their 1826 redesign. After his death in 1830, the King's younger brother, William IV continued the work but neither moved in.
A fire in 1834 destroyed the Houses of Parliament and the King offered the Palace's accommodation though his offer was declined.
Therefore Queen Victoria was the first monarch to move in, in 1837 - to make room for her growing family a wing was added creating the quadrangle design it is today.
Redesign projects were complete just before the outbreak of World War II in 1914.

An odd and eccentric request. In the town of Moulins in central France a dying request 100 years in the making.
Maison Mantin was willed to the town months before Louis Mantin's death in 1905 but with the insistence that the house be closed and reopened in 100 years as a museum. For good reason - integrity! He wanted the house to be a time capsule for future generations to see how bourgeois gentlemen lived in the early 1900s.
And so there it sat through two wars, shuttered, a mysterious presence in the shadows of the Moulin's cathedral. Even German occupiers during World War II left it unscathed.
A team of 30 specialists did the necessary restoration.
The house had advanced features - electric lighting, flushing toilets, under-floor heating with stained glass (love) and carved wood!
Very, very, very cool.
