Welcome to doll island: Secret shrine to little girl who drowned more than 50 years ago has become a creepy tourist attraction
Doll parts suspended from trees and strung up across ramshackle buildings have become a sinister fascination to tourists who flock to the shrine created by a Mexican artist for a little girl who drowned. Isla de la Munecas, the Island of Dolls, is a macabre memorial that was discovered when council workers were cleaning a canal south of Mexico City. Reclusive artist Julian Santana Barrera had been creating his creepy masterpiece for more than 50 years after finding a doll floating in the canal just days after a little girl's body had been fished out of the water.

He also piloted a Lancaster bomber and flew in the sortie that destroyed Nazi battleship Tirpitz (inset). Before Glastonbury went corporate: Picture archive charts how the music festival has evolved since the 1970s (but the mud never really goes away)
These pictures show Glastonbury Festival in all its glory from the early seventies (top left) right through to the modern day. In early pictures, relaxed festival-goers at the infamous Somerset site can be seen arriving at a muddy campsite (top right) while others enjoy top-billed acts such as New Model Army (bottom left) and The Boomtown Rats. The collection also includes pictures of the ever-growing site from above such as one taken in 1992 where 70,000 people attended (bottom right).

Stone Age Art

The proof that Stone Age man made great art: Cave paintings of mammoths, bison and bears from 36,000 years ago are preserved for posterity (and replicas made so visitors can see them)
The Grotte Chauvet in the Ardeche region of southern France, which survived sealed off for millennia before its accidental discovery in 1994, contains more than 1,000 drawings dating back some 36,000 years to what is believed to be the first human culture in Europe. They include several animal species, some of them extinct, such as mammoths, bears, wildcats, rhinos, bison and aurochs, as well as 4,000 inventoried remains of prehistoric fauna, and a variety of human footprints and handprints. The opening of the cave, located about 25 metres underground, was closed off by a rockfall 23,000 years ago - perfectly preserving the inside. It lay undisturbed until it was found by three French cave experts and almost immediately declared a protected heritage site in France. Delegates at UNESCO's World Heritage Committee voted to grant the status to the cave at a gathering in Doha, Qatar.
