An interesting item for sale at Lyon & Turnbull described as a rare broadside’ printed on two sheets: Lot 19, is a poster from the late 1860s, published in Birmingham by anti-slavery campaigners.
Despatch from Mr. Eyre to Mr. Cardwell, dated January 1866 ...
'"It is also well known out here, that Mr. Gordon was universally regarded as a bad man in every sense of the word. Reported to be grossly immoral and an adulterer, a liar, a swindler, dishonest, cruel, vindictive, and a hypocrite, such are the terms applied to the late G. W. Gordon and I believe abundant proof might be adduced of all these traits."

The First Trudeau

de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception

Moment in time:
Dec. 21, 1967 - Pierre Trudeau speaks on the 'bedrooms of the nation':
"There's no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation," Pierre Trudeau.
The Justice Minister was defending legislation that, in its final form, decriminalized homosexuality, permitted abortion in certain circumstances, decriminalized contraception, introduced the 0.08 blood alcohol concentration limit for drinking and driving, legalized lotteries, restricted the use of firearms and more.
That year Trudeau introduced the bill, the Supreme Court had upheld a dangerous-offender life sentence for a man convicted of homosexuality, and NDP Leader Tommy Douglas appeared enlightened when he declared in 1968:
"Instead of treating [homosexuality] as a crime and driving it underground, we ought to recognize it for what it is: It's a mental illness." Despite an attempted filibuster from the Créditistes, Bill C-150 passed in May, 1969 - with Trudeau as Prime Minister at that point - forever shattering the power of religion to restrict the actions of government and bringing social tolerance to this land.

In the BBC documentary, Royal Cousins at War, the story of how the young Wilhelm's hatred of his parents, and all things Biritsh, in part, brought about the beginning of the First World War is told.

His mother Vicky was only 17 when she married Prussia’s dashing Crown Prince Friedrich, known as Fritz, in 1858.
It was a passionate love match that also fulfilled the dynastic dreams of her German father Prince Albert. But her first pregnancy almost ended in disaster, after she underwent a traumatic breech delivery.

Hollywood will portray Ted Kennedy as a hero in new movie on the incident. ..‪
Nearly five decades after Mary Jo Kopechne died in a car driven by Ted Kennedy, Hollywood is preparing a movie about the incident that appears more sympathetic to him than to her. Kopechne, a 28-year-old former campaign worker for Kennedy's late brother Robert, was one of several women from the RFK campaign who attended a party on the remote island of Chappaquiddick off the coast of Massachusetts in July 1969, along with Kennedy and several other...

secret royal

de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception

For years rumours have swirled about Prince George, Duke of Kent, younger brother to King Edward VIII and King George VI — suggesting that he had fathered a love-child with his long-time mistress Alice ‘Kiki’ Gwynne, a glamorous but drug-addicted American socialite who was a member of Kenya’s notorious Happy Valley set.

The truth, though, is a little different, and much more fascinating.

Although before she married an American writer, Kiki may have suffered the miscarriage of a child who could have been George’s, the Prince became much more dangerously entangled with another woman.

She was Violet Isobel Christine Evans, the daughter of a Canadian coal merchant.

Never mind the quality, feel the size! Picture shows how tins of Christmas favourite
This photograph claims to show how Nestle has slimmed down tubs of festive favourite Quality Street three times over the last 17 years. The image has sparked widespread outrage on social media after it was posted on the Quality Street Facebook page by concerned customer Charlotte Stacey Hook. In her post, Ms Hook claims that the oldest tin, pictured on the far left, was bought in 1998. However, some commenters have argued that it is the design used by the confectionery giant in the 1980s. The newest tin, pictured far right, features a design introduced for the 780g tubs in 2014. Nestle came under fire last year after it emerged the weight of the tins had been reduced from 820g to 780g - a cut of about five chocolates - while the price had remained the same.

Queen's illegitimate cousin?

... with a sex mad spy for a mother sounds preposterous but new book reveals compelling evidence buried in MI5 file

Accepting an invitation to spend summer at his uncle's baronial home in Upper Austria, the last thing Thomas Willes expected was to be staying next to a house full of beautiful, aristocratic young women.

The 25-year-old London stockbroker had expected little more than a month pottering around the beautiful lake of Wolfgangsee, some hearty hikes, and brushing up on his German — rather than brushing up against the racy British It-girls who visited the mansion.

One day during that heady August of 1936, a Morris car with British licence plates drew up outside the house, having driven 800 miles from London. Out stepped two immaculate beauties.
