Ancient Faces

de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception

He was born in Germany in 1874, and brought to the United States by his parents when he was 5. His father’s poor health forced him to drop out of school at 14 to support the family.

Unhappy as a pharmacist, he completed a three-year law course in only 18 months and was admitted to the Bar in 1900, but it wasn't enough...he later found a better way to make his fortune.
