"It was an idea of Alexander Graham Bell to transform what had been a small technical society of geographers into a popular society whose theme is the world and all that is in it .... when he invented the modern version of the National Geographic at end of the 19th century, he hit upon an enduring idea.  Our job is to continuously breathe new life and relevance into that visionary idea of the Society."

A storied Washington legacy since its founding in 1888 saw five generations of the Hubbard-Bell-Grosvenor families' quiet chairmanship of the Geographic Society. Heirs to Alexander Graham Bell, their 122 consecutive years of stewardship ends with the retirement of Gilbert M. Grosvenor on 1 January 2011.
