A landslide preserved an arctic forest - mummified 2 to 8 million years ago - recently discovered. As arctic ice melts more buried forests are expected to appear, scientists hope these discoveries will assist in predicting today's arctic response to global warming. Unfortunately the warming of these frozen forests will boost the gas house effect as exposed wood begins to rot and methane and carbon dioxide are released.
This forest distinguishes itself for being so far north - when the earth cooled 11 million years ago - it would have been first to feel the effects.
