No doubt this influential tragedy has slipped into the shadows of our collective memory but the Triangle Shirtwaist Company fire on 25th March 1911 terrified residents of New York's Greenwich Village neighbourhood.

It was 100 years ago and 146 immigrant workers including girls and women perished, many jumped from the burning building.

It is worth recall because the rights and work environment of immigrant workers as well as fire-safety laws became critical to the organized labour movement as a result.
