The Academy was founded in 1946 - Cyd Cassyd wanted to call the award Ike - a shortened version of iconoscope - however the President's name was Ike.  As a result the male Immy became the female symbol known as an Emmy.

.... so many iconic names follow similarly ambivalent and strange routes.
