Romney's Mexican Heritage

de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception

US Presidential candidate Mitt Romney is a descendant of religious pioneers who crossed the border into Mexico 125 years ago - what his cheerers term as a great heritage of brave ancestors who were willing to travel distances to learn new perspectives of the world.

Romney has written little about his family history except to briefly state that they had escaped to Mexico because of religious persecution of their beliefs.

His great grandfather Miles Park Romney led the first expedition - not from persecution but from prosecution for polygamy called "plural marriage" by the Mormon faithful.

His family remained in Mexico after the practice of polygamy ended.  Romney's father,George, was born in northern Mexico in Colonia Dublan and his mother was born in Utah.

When George Romney was five years old the Mexican revolution drove the family back to the safety of the United States.  Today, Romney's Mexican brethren are aware of their wealthy relative and are certain his presidency will be sensitive to Mexican issues.
