The original patents for some of the world's most famous toys have been collected and published by the history website Retronaut.

The site details the origins of heavyweight popular toys through the early 20th century.  They include the 1904 patent for Monopoly; Lego, filed by the son of inventor Ole Kirk Christiansen in 1961.  Meccano, which is listed on the 1906 patent as a 'toy or educational device' and the Hornby Model Railways and Dinky Toys.

The spring toy the slinky, was invented by naval engineer Richard James and given the go-ahead in 1947.

The 'tracing device' the Etch-a-Sketch, which lets users draw on to the screen by twisting two knobs - the brainchild of French inventor Arthur Grandjean, it was last year used to create a stunningly detailed portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, taking expert George Vlosich 80 hours to complete.

And lets not forget Barbie and Gameboy!

Wonderful inventions, wonderful memories.
