Carrots used to be Purple

Orange colored carrots of which we are familiar is not their natural color. In fact, carrots were modified by their Dutch growers in the 17th century to match their national color.

A search for "purple carrots" revealed a number of images of present day purple carrots, like the ones in the picture. Carrots also come in shades of red in certain parts of the world.
