Forty-one
years ago today, activist and scholar Angela Davis was acquitted of
conspiracy and murder charges in connection with the Soledad Brothers
a.k.a. Black militants George and Jonathan Jackson. In 1970, Jonathan
burst in to a California courtroom and abducted Judge Harold Haley, a
prosecutor, and three female jurors, while freeing two inmates on trial
for murder.
While Jonathan hoped to exchange the hostages for
George, everyone -- with the exception of George -- ended up being
killed in the situation.
Davis ended up being infamously blamed for providing the firearms for the kidnappings.
But in 1972 on this day, she would be acquitted of all of the charges
against her, and since then, she has dedicated her life to bringing down
the "prison industrial complex" while speaking around the world
fighting racism, feminism, and gun control. Ms. Davis should be an
inspiration to us all!
