Clydesdale Coffee Mill in Jamaica Colonial Heritage Society.

Water wheel at coffee mill house. Wheel is in good condition.

Details of the axle and drive assembly. The horizontal axle shaft from the center of the waterwheel entered from about the 10 o'clock position. On this axle was a wooden wheel with wooden gears which drove the large horizontal wheel which has 6 spokes to which the vertical shaft with the steel band is attached. This a part of the lower section of the pulper. The vertical shaft drove another wheel in a groove which actually did the pulping of the coffee berries. View from the floor above of the pulper. The coffee beans would have been in the circular water filled trough and the wheel lying on its side would have been running around in the trough and pulping the beans. The wheel was attached to the vertical shaft seen in the previous photo.

Pulper wheel. This was attached to the horizontal shaft seen near the top left of the photos and would move around the troughed groove filled with water and beans.

Thanks for the kind feedback on the Coffee Mill photos. This was an additional and much smaller building which also has a water wheel and which is much lower than the main waterwheel. We do weekends at Holywell 3 or 4 times a year and use it as "base camp" for forays in the mountains. Next trip is Cinchona again, but this time driving straight up through the pine forest to St Helens Gap rather than do the Top Mountain - Halls Delight route. I will walk with a tape measure and get some more details on the large coffee mill as well as this small building which we did not explore.
