iconic moments of protest
de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception
Anthropologist
Margaret Mead once said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful,
committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing
that ever has." Social protests surfaced around the world frequently
over the last few years, from the Arab Spring to Zuccotti Park in New
York, and more recently, Gezi Park in Istanbul and cities across Brazil.
This photo essay recalls iconic moments of protest from decades ago
through today. Pictured is a 17-year-old civil rights demonstrator,
defying an anti-parading ordinance in Birmingham, Ala., in 1963 -- when
revolution over race in America began to irrevocably change the
country's consciousness.
