Leading figure in the Mexican Revolution, which broke out in 1910. He formed and commanded an important revolutionary force, the Liberation Army of the South, to fight for the peasants who lived under semi-feudal conditions. His followers were known as Zapatistas, and he is still revered throughout Latin America.
