“There
is a wisdom that is woe; but there is a woe that is madness. And there
is a Catskill eagle in some souls that can alike dive down into the
blackest gorges, and soar out of them again and become invisible in the
sunny spaces. And even if he for ever flies within the gorge, that gorge
is in the mountains; so that even in his lowest swoop the mountain
eagle is still higher than other birds upon the plain, even though they
soar. ”
from MOBY-DICK
- Herman Melville, born 1 August 1819.
American writer whose first three books gained much contemporary
attention, but after a fast-blooming literary success in the late 1840s,
his popularity declined precipitously in the mid-1850s and never
recovered during his lifetime. When he died in 1891, he was almost
completely forgotten. It was not until the "Melville Revival" in the
early 20th century that his work won recognition, especially Moby-Dick,
which was hailed as one of the literary masterpieces of both American
and world literature.
