Nat Turner

de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception

On this day in 1831, captive Nat Turner staged a slave rebellion, killing 60 White men, women, and children.

Turner later said he had received a message from God to rebel against the slave masters who kept him and his people in bondage.

According to published reports, Turner's mother, who was African-born, had to be stopped from killing him at birth because she could not bear to give birth to an enslaved child. After she was stopped, she believed her son's life was spared because he was special and his life had purpose.

"Although he remains a controversial Black figure, Nat Turner’s legacy remains that of a man who felt that the injustices he and his people faced were ungodly and that a divine source led him to free other captives by whatever means available.

"Some scholars have painted Nat Turner as a terrorist while other value him as a hero. At NewsOne, we remember — and honor — a man who fearlessly chose freedom in death over a life in captivity."

Make sure to tell your kids that we didn't take slavery laying down.
