In 1917 as America joined the allied troops in Europe, he was homeless, living off scraps from trash cans. He then joined the army, the 102nd Infantry, 26th Yankee
Division out of New Haven Connecticut. Once in France he marched into
battle with the doughboys, but soon found himself the victim of a German
chlorine gas attack. In spite of his background he proved himself an
able soldier. He saved many lives, single-handedly captured a German
soldier and even located wounded soldiers on the battlefield. He served
his country in seventeen battles before he was relieved of combat duty
while recovering from a grenade blast.
