The real Danger UXB: George Cross awarded to bomb disposal novice killed when his commander accidentally triggered explosion during Blitz sells for £74,000
Ordinary Seaman Bennett Southwell (pictured) was killed in October 1940 after volunteering with a bomb disposal unit. His commanding officer accidentally set off an unexploded bomb in the East End, and OS Bennett died when he was caught up in the blast. He was awarded a posthumous George Cross in 1941
