Wing Commander Paul Bingham Elwell shot down at at least one or maybe two of the planes flying over the French coast in 1944. he only abandoned the onslaught when his Mosquito ran out of ammunition and he was later awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. His son John Elwell, 64, has taken the difficult decision to sell his father's medals at auction to support his own son. The set, which were bought by a private British collector, raised £6,566.
