Abolitionist John Brown was hanged today in 1859 for leading a raid on Harpers Ferry intended to spark a slave revolt. Brown was a genius at working the press; his trial and execution generated tremendous publicity, transforming his image in the North from fiery rebel into a a gentle grandfather-like figure, martyred for the cause against slavery.
