Jesuit polymath Athanasius Kircher was the first human in recorded history to be willingly lowered into a volcano and an early pioneer of Egyptology. He was also fascinated by music, writing about a hypothetical "cat keyboard" (katzenklavier) and attempting to transcribe the calls of birds. See more images from his 1650 treatise on music here:
