Mary Stuart, Queen of Scotland

de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception

Today in 1542 Mary Stuart became Queen of Scotland at just 6 days old. So much has been written about her. After a series of disastrous marriages the Scots revolted against her and she appealed to her cousin Elizabeth I who held her captive. I chose to write about the extraordinary triangle that developed between her, her gaoler the Earl of Shrewsbury, and his wonderful wife Bess of Hardwick, in The Other Queen. Poor Mary was eventually executed for treason in 1587.
