The way ads used to be: Classic campaigns by brands including Clarks, Vogue and Fiat show how household names were sold in the 1960s, 70s and 80s
The amusing and thought-provoking images used in a range of iconic adverts of yesteryear are being showcased to mark the roll call of print and television adverts created by Collett Dickenson Pearce during the industry's heyday - an era recently depicted in U.S television drama Mad Men. From brands such as Clarks (top left and bottom right) and Vogue (inset), to Fiat (top right) and Cinzano, the exhibition, entitled Outside: Collett Dickenson Pearce, includes the 1979 advert for The Strada car which uses the tagline 'Handbuilt by robots' (bottom left). Ironically, when Hugh Hudson arrived on set to film the TV commercial for the campaign, he had to navigate past picketers outside who were protesting against the so-called robots taking their jobs. Another advert show fierce Labour Party rivals Tony Benn and Denis Healey taking pictures of one other under the headline 'They obviously felt like shooting each other', a campaign used to promote an Olympus camera.
