The Queen's Uncle

Fergus Bowes-Lyon, son of the 14th Earl of Strathmore, elder brother to the Queen Mother and the uncle Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen Mother's brother and so very many lost. The country and their families never truly recovered from the carnage and waste.
The loss of Britain's youth in the first World War war was all the more poignant because of the shocking carnage due to incompetence in the upper ranks. Had the leadership been based on merit rather than social rank, many lives would have been saved. Terrible and unnecessary loss. Many courageous men died for an uncertain cause.

The celebrated London bus was used to transport thousands of troops to and from the Western Front, including at the Battle of Loos in northern France, which started 100 years ago today. This less familiar side of the Great War is revealed today in an extraordinary collection of photographs, which show the London buses that were adapted for use on the front line. More than 1,000 of the vehicles were sent from the capital and across the Channel after being adapted for use on the front line. As well as carrying troops these versatile chassis of B-type buses were also converted into ambulances, lorries and even lofts for carrier pigeons - and only 250 returned to Britain in 1918.

Candid footage from behind the scenes of the last film Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe ever starred in has emerged for sale for £20,000. The 48-minute reel of never-before-seen footage was shot as troubled screen siren Monroe filmed at various locations across the U.S. for the 1961 film The Misfits. Frames taken from the rare footage shows her laughing and filming with co-stars Clark Gable (pictured top right) and Eli Wallach (left), having her hair and makeup done (bottom right), and taking instructions from directors.

Rosemary spent more than 50 years living in a Wisconsin hospital cared for by a nun when she could have been treated with therapy. There are no photos of her brothers JFK or Bobby visitng their sister after her surgery.

he origin of the name Columbia goes back to 1738 when it was published in the weekly publication of the debates of the British Parliament. It was forbidden to print the debates. To camouflage this they were published as Reports of the Debates of the Senate of Lilliput. Fictional names were thought up for other countries and Columbia was the one used for America, the one responsible for this is most probably Samuel Johnson. The name finally became the female personification of America and was chosen to be the name and logo of the company. It is not clear however on which woman Columbia has been based. source

On this day in 1944, Frank Capra's "Arsenic and Old Lace," based on the hit Broadway comedy starring Cary Grant and Priscilla Lane, opened in theaters.

Sam and Friends was the first “Muppet” show and it was produced by Jim Henson and his future wife Jane Nebel. It aired locally on WRC-TV in Washington, DC right after the Huntley-Brinkley Report. This weird programming pairing led to witty impressions of the legendary newsmen. There was also western spoof with jokes about shooting people, absurd sketches, and characters like Harry the Hipster, the ever-voracious Yorick, and a snake with arms named Icky Gunk. It’s interesting to note that Harry the Hipster and Kermit’s antics seem more like the precursors to Sifl & Olly than the current iteration of the Muppets.
