Photo Series of Underage Prostitutes in 1970s Times Square

In the 1970s, pimps and prostitutes haunted Times Square along with crime-filled subways and drug dealers

  • Photographer, Stephen Shames, captured daunting images of underage prostitutes in late 70s in new photo series

  • Times Square's decline began in 1960s and reached its peak in late 80s when prostitution dominated landscape

  • Boy prostitutes were called 'chickens' and older men who paid for sex with boys were called 'chicken hawks'

  • The boys were called street hustlers, which meant that they possibly supported their families through prostitution

On April 8, 2004 Times Square celebrates its 100th anniversary looking quite different from the way it was in the 1970's and 80's. Originally the heart of New York's night life, Broadway shows and grandiose movie theaters, Times Square's decline began in the 1960's and reached its peak in the late 80's when prostitution and sex shops dominated the landscape. Times Square's current incarnation started in the 90s with the arrival of major companies such as Disney, Starbucks, Conde Nast, Reuters, Virgin and others who built office towers or opened mega stores. Critics complain that Times Square has lost its New York feel and now resembles most American entertainment centers and malls. (Stephen Shames/Polaris) ///
