I love the stories of the British Royal families' historic relatives. The movies are always fun and then I can read the real accounts later. I enjoyed The Young Victoria, moreso because Emily Blunt is a favourite of mine. The historic record is, in part, a true love story for the ages.

In Classical Athens 525-322 BC, the Greeks honoured Hera, wife and sister of Zeus as the patron of weddings and marriage. The month of Gamelion when Hera and Zeus married was most popular for weddings
In an Athenian wedding the bridal party made it's way to the groom's house by torch lit procession, the newly married likely met for the first time that day and rode in a chariot followed by gift bearers singing the wedding hymn. The following morning the bride's parents brought more gifts, giving their blessing to the union and encouraging their daughter to fulfill her primary role of producing a male heir.
In the Roman Empire 100 BC - AD 200, weddings of wealthy Romans were lavish, the ceremony tyically held at the bride's home, followed by a sacrifice and wedding feast, concluded with a gala procession to the home of the groom where the bride was lifted across the threshold to prevent bad luck.
The Vikings AD 800-1100 - marriage brought a Viking woman various assets, her husband acknowledged her worth beforehand by agreeing to pay a bride price for her. After a simple wedding ceremony marked by drinking bridal ale, the husband gave his wife a handsome gift. If divorce followed he repaid the dowry her father entrusted to him. Either party obtained divorce by announcing their intent infront of witnesses.
Little known Biblical history .... until the time of emperor Augustine, Roman society had a utilitarian view of marriage, to produce male heirs to inherit property and continue the family name. Divorce was justified on grounds of a wife's inability to produce children. The Roman concept of paterfamilias was marriage for procreation and prostitutes for sexual satisfaction.
Increasing numbers of men were failing to marry and Augustus sought to redress the issue - in 18 BC he proclaimed new laws that levied higher taxes on unmarried men and women and granted financial benefits to those married. The law increased marriage but not monogamy, and prostitution flourished. The Apostle Paul wrote of this in 1 Corinthians 7:2-4 "But because of cases of sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband."
Paul's teaching was radical for Roman custom - he granted unknown rights to wives and put them at equal status to their husbands and stating a wife had "authority" over her husband's body which must have shocked men used to seeking pleasure outside of marriage.
New Testament teachings eventually set the standard for Western civilization lasting more than 19 centuries.

Social issues that befuddle are set in stone to those who do not know history and doubt the possibility of change ... if only we believe. Christian pomposity and hypocrisy
The Christian position that disenfranchised the gay community in California marred the incredible night of Barack Obama's electoral victory.
I endured a spirited exchange two weeks prior on homosexual legitimacy. My opponent denied that people are born gay and if they do, the % is unknown. He was admant that many have been counselled and had changed their orientation through the church because being gay is a modern expression of Godless existence. Strange - there are countless references to homosexuality in historical record.
As usual arguments founded on Christian virtue are woefully under informed and smacks of someone who lacks intellectual curiosity. Sprouting incessantly about Christian values anchored in the Bible; forgetting of course that modern social concepts of which they are beneficiaries have evolved always beyond Biblical record.
In California 75% of black women voted for proposition 8 while revelling in Obama's unprecedented electoral sweep. I reminded my opponent that the Bible was used to justify the enslavement of Africans and his attitude mirrors the bigotry of that time. He was unable to connect the two, attitudes toward unaccepted sexual orientation and racial inequality.
The disenfranchisement is the same, the inability to see the human face is the same, the intractable bigotry is the same. It rarely occurs that a minority group recently uplifted turns to the next minority group to uplift them in turn.
Barack Obama, a man of unceasing humanity and broad intellect does not support uncompromising positions. My point is this - people are not thinking, they have knee jerk reactions to complex issues, are intellectually lazy and all pumped up to skewer others. A very sad, mediocre commentary to which I will not yield.

soul pirates
jury is in as far as I'm concerned that drug pushers are the most evil among people -in a viscious world such as this replete with every version of parasitic menace, to rise to the top of that stinking heap is a feat - how disconnected and selfish does one need to be to prey on people who are shells of old memories - to see profit and amusement in the broken spirit of another takes a soul as empty as the user.
I love history
history gives depth, direction, purpose in human life - without its knowledge we repeat lessons all learned in earlier life - as life has no vacum it is useless to insist that life is understood without history underpinned - history is the compass of all humanity - to ignore its placement is to secure one's own undoing.

sometimes its fun to fight yourself back from failure - your own personal hades builds spirit like no other training and I am grateful for my many bouts of distress - they made me strive to my personal best and for these things and more I am grateful.
MY BOSS
so much hope and loyalty was my error - like a date the best foot set on stage and my mistake to embrace that display - I had such belief - I would lie in the street for you - betrayed am I when I consider our time - a boss with interests underhand found solace in the machinations of putrid braggarts his level was met and I felt inept - I was unaware of the daggers that plotted my demise my boss also a conspirator in its design - my disappointment has pained me after it terrorized and sidelined me - I felt remorse even when I had no reason for such course - my path is set I have little to connect with people who play in shadows and break spirits in others - my hypocrisy is unbuilt, my betrayal unspent I play no games my mind is unchained - courageous am I with no need for popular mimes - sure am I that I can speak my mind to the faces that meet mine and I see their eyes - I speak my mind regardless of the boomerang - my boss was not with me he had left my side had slithered to the other side - and that side so beneath my pride could never do for me - could never do for me - beneath my pride.

courtship
men of home grown civility are sorely missed when confronted with those who lack subtle consistencies - only then do long abhored lessons of honourable discharge take on awesome utility in adult courtship and loving regard.
a man of proper breeding is a gem of immense meaning - for middle class girls like me any shortfall is greatly unsettling - walking under water is my feeling as I weed through pitfalls of personal confusion - these men are bewildering!
the ordinary, newly minted are unaware of needing all these badges of breeding - awkward and clumsy they knock about sending me dizzy and on guard.
give me heartbreak give me disappointment give me all the indignities of unrequited loving but always must they be dealt by the hand of an emissary of middle class society.
