Brigadier General Tadeusz Sawicz received Poland's highest honour and Britain's Distinguished Flying Cross for shooting down three German aircraft.
He is believed to be the last pilot of the Polish air forces - he fought in the 1940 Battle of Britain and served in the RAF until 1947.
His death marks the passage of another brave soul of a great generation.

At the end of the first world war a replica of Paris was built to fool German bombers. On the 93rd anniversary of the Armistice, archives have revealed a plan with sham streets lined with electric lights, replica buildings, even the Gare du Nord train station, the Arc de Triomphe and Opera and industrial suburbs Saint-Denis and Aubervilliers were all built as doubles.
As the conflict neared its end the Difense Contre Avions responsible for defence against air attacks began building the replica.
Private firms were contracted to create the second 'City of Light' - wooden replicas were finished with incredible detail including translucent paint to create the effect of dirty glass roofs of factories.
Alas the replica was not complete by the last raid in September of 1918 and therefore was never tested although the city did escape both wars largely unscathed.

Andy Rooney entered television soon after the second world war writing entertainment material. His segment on 60 Minutes made him famous - he was better known for the things he didn't like.
Born Andrew Aitken Rooney in 1919 in Albany, he was a copy boy at the Knickerbocker News before entering College University where he played left guard on the football team. He was drafted into the army three months before the attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941. He distinguished himself as sergeant and earned a Bronze Star for reporting underfire at the Battle at Normandy!
He returned to writing after the war and the rest is history ... farewell to a beloved curmudgeon.

The most famous of frescoes painted by Renaissance painter Giotto di Bondone was recently uncovered by art restorers and revealed what was thought to have been a 15th century concept of obscuring figures in the clouds.
Although di Bondone's frescoe is dated in the 13th century he hid the face of the devil in a cloud or some restorers have suggested, the artist painted someone known to him as the devil and obscured their face in the painting.

Blackbeard's Canon Raised

A 2000 pound canon has been raised from the wreck of pirate Captain Blackbeard's ship.
His was the infamous Queen Anne's Revenge commandered during the 18th century - the vessel was a French slave ship he captured in 1717 and renamed.
Monikered for his long black beard his real name is surmised to be Edward Thatch or Teach. Although his career spanned only two years he was the most feared pirate in the world once holding the entire city of Charleston, South Carolina hostage, he was later pardoned by the Governor.
In 1718 his ship ran aground on a sand bar near the town of Beaufort, North Carolina and likely sat out until collapsing and disintegrating.
History suggests he died five months later, killed by volunteers of the Royal Navy.
