Freudian Addiction

A very absorbing topic ... in the early days of medicine and psychoanalysis when men of promising brilliance became unwitting addicts to cocaine and other substances through experimentation and the bewildering hubris of ego slain by the soaring warmth of narcotic dilusion.

In this book Sigmund Freud and William Halsted's early careers are explored as they fell under the narco spell and the effect of thus on their seminal contributions.

Read this book - An Anatomy of Addiction by Howard Markel.

Sporty and non-assuming British royal, Zara Phillips married her rugged rugby star Mike Tindall wearing a family heirloom of historic significance.

The Meander tiara of a classic Greek key pattern was inspired by the marriage of Princess Alice of Batternberg to Prince Andrew of Greece, father of Zara's grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh.  Princess Elizabeth was gifted the silver headpiece from her mother-in-law in 1947 for a wedding gift.  In turn, then Queen, Elizabeth II gave the piece to the Princess Royal in 1972 who lent it to her daughter, Zara, on her wedding day.

The Greatest Racehorse in History

de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception

SECRETARIAT - the greatest racehorse in history ruled the sport world in 1972 and 1973 and holds the unbeatable record of 37 years at the Belmont Stakes having won with 31 lengths.  And that win is still unheard of today.  Secretariat's phenomenal career followed another mythically great racer, Seabiscuit, who bolstered the spirit and hope of Americans during the Great Depression.

In 2010 the wonderful and beautiful Diane Lane played the racing phenom's owner Penny Chenery, a woman of unmatched courage of faith, with costars John Malkovich as trainer Lucien Laurin and Nelson Ellis who played the great groomer of superstar racehorses Eddie Sweat - Nelson currently plays the singularly entertaining role of Lafayette on HBOs True Blood.  Not to be left out, Secretariat's sterling rider Ron Turcotte.  Anyone or anything in the periphery of this great specimen is and will alwys be great themselves.  To the legacy of a tremendous animal ... never forgotten.  And of course I love all my animals unreservedly.

I sucked my breath - slumped - then stiffened - when Amy's BREAKING NEWS headline jerkily scrolled up my screen.

A dream is dead.

This will be the day when Amy Jade Winehouse died - Saturday, 23 July 2011 and her legend was reborn.  She was a brilliant artist in life and a rarefiled musical genius in death.

Amy once mused on joining that etheral club of musical greatness - the rare rank of Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Mama Cass, Mary Carpenter, Kurt Cobain, Bob Marley ....

now Amy is one of that rare rank too.

My wail ... AMY AMY AMY! NO THIRD ALBUM?

Biblical City of David?

de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception

Archaeologists believe they have found the ancient City of David that spanned from Egypt to the Euphrates and is evidence that the powerful 10th Century BC kingdom named for Israel's second king did exist.  The ancient Jewish empire was described in the Bible as the first Jewish state referenced in Judaism, Christianity and Islam.  Archeologists have disputed and still question the site's veracity while historians caution that this site is at the formative phase of what became the powerful state of Judah.

The Kennedy clan first fell for Martha's Vineyard in 1926 when Joseph and Rose rented a summer cottage there - years later they bought the main house property for thier bulging family. Twenty years later, brothers JFK and RFK bought adjacent houses and expanded the compound.

Edward Kennedy had made the main house his home while RFK's widow Ethel still lives in another on the compound.  Now a troubling crossroads looms as Ted Kennedy's heirs consider transfering the main house for ownsership by the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for use as an institute or museum.

An illegal dig near Lake Nemi, south of Rome reveals a giant statue of hated Roman emperor Caligula - the site may have been the location of one of his imperial palaces.

The "tomb-raiders" have been arrested.

The statue, covered by dirt for over 2000 years is of a robed man on a throne reminiscent of the Greek god Zeus.  The statue is shod in the 'caliga' shoes that were worn by Roman legionnaires for which Caligula was called.

Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus reigned from 37 to 41 AD.

Oh Lord....

Here we go - the Planking Craze sweeping the world of the dim-witted has recently been criticized as racist impertinence ...

Because slaves sold through the middle passage were forced into that position and chained to the floor of the ships' holds as they were transported across the Atlantic.  The experience must have been horrific.

What do you think?  It may be an exercise in insensitivity but these dim wits had no idea and definately know no history!

Hundreds of years of water currents and hurricanes has spread the dimensions of the wreck but divers expect they are on the right track and expect to find more treasure in this $500 million enterprise.
