under camouflage - America's solution to fooling bombers
 Click topic for LINK

At the end of the first world war a replica of Paris was built to fool German bombers.  On the 93rd anniversary of the Armistice, archives have revealed a plan with sham streets lined with electric lights, replica buildings, even the Gare du Nord train station, the Arc de Triomphe and Opera and industrial suburbs Saint-Denis and Aubervilliers were all built as doubles.

As the conflict neared its end the Difense Contre Avions responsible for defence against air attacks began building the replica.

Private firms were contracted to create the second 'City of Light' - wooden replicas were finished with incredible detail including translucent paint to create the effect of dirty glass roofs of factories.

Alas the replica was not complete by the last raid in September of 1918 and therefore was never tested although the city did escape both wars largely unscathed.

The most famous of frescoes painted by Renaissance painter Giotto di Bondone was recently uncovered by art restorers and revealed what was thought to have been a 15th century concept of obscuring figures in the clouds.

Although di Bondone's frescoe is dated in the 13th century he hid the face of the devil in a cloud or some restorers have suggested, the artist painted someone known to him as the devil and obscured their face in the painting.

Another Stephen King blockbuster hurtles towards bookshelves and kindles everywhere and is a thriller and historical fiction.

King crafts alternative history by positing that JFK survived that infamous day of his assassination on 11-22-63.

The plot makes Lee Harvey Oswald a lone conspirator ... King muses - "that one man can change the course of history .... and everything becomes meaningless and people don't like that."

No grand conspiracy just one lucky man who keened for fame and power and nursed an evil portent.

Blackbeard's Canon Raised

A 2000 pound canon has been raised from the wreck of pirate Captain Blackbeard's ship.

His was the infamous Queen Anne's Revenge commandered during the 18th century - the vessel was a French slave ship he captured in 1717 and renamed.

Monikered for his long black beard his real name is surmised to be Edward Thatch or Teach.  Although his career spanned only two years he was the most feared pirate in the world once holding the entire city of Charleston, South Carolina hostage, he was later pardoned by the Governor.

In 1718 his ship ran aground on a sand bar near the town of Beaufort, North Carolina and likely sat out until collapsing and disintegrating.

History suggests he died five months later, killed by volunteers of the Royal Navy.

Historic Greek Resentment

Greek resentment at memories of the cruel Hitlerian military occupation from 1941-1944 is alive and on the rise.

Thousands starved while their entire Jewish population was deported and exterminated.  Entire villages were massacred while the already poverty stricken country was robbed of all its assets in gold, cotton, tobacco, olive oil and food.

The war generation have transferred their resentment to Greek youth.  They insist Germany compensate for their crimes against Greece and its wholesale loss in the war.

Pencil Etched Evil

British artist Helen McKie was a well known travel and commercial artist, her popular military paintings gained her public appeal during the first world war - one of her paintings was presented to Churchill in WWII.

She inexplicably gained access to Brown House by permission of Hitler's aide-de-camp Bruelenen and made her chillingly alive sketches shortly before Hitler seized power and the world made its devastating turn in German and human history.  She was the only female artist admitted to sketch there.

The Brown House was the Nazi headquarters after January 1st 1931 where the offices of Hitler, Himmler, Goring and Hess lay and where a blood spattered Nazi flag "the blood flag" - their sacred relic - a swastika blooded when Munich police fired on Nazi members in 1923 proudly stood.

The pencil sketches will be auctioned.
