Legendary capers captured by the History Channel
Famous art heists included the lifting in 1911 and return in 1913 of the Mona Lisa - see a summarized tale of her burglary at the link. The Last Judgement stolen by Polish Pirates in 1473 hangs today in a Polish museum. In the holocaust 20 percent of Europe's riches were stolen and never recovered including especially from the oppulent Catherine Palace near St. Petersburg. Two Renoirs and a Rembrandt were spirited away in 2000 in Stockholm, all were recovered by 2005. In 1990 the largest heist in history of 13 works of art were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum and are still at large.
Its a lovely tour none-the-less. Take a stroll through artistic beauty and intrigue.

George Lucas uses Blu Ray to make changes to his classic science fiction extravaganzas.
In The Empire Strikes Back he corrects a 30 year old mistake of a monster's arm and its revealing supporting pole. Changes were made in Return of the Jedi as well. And Episode I: The Phantom Menace has an updated Yoda.

A Philandering Jamaican Slave Owner

The British version of Who Do You Think You Are shocks Lord Coe with revelations of a philandering forefather who fathered six illegitimate children with his slaves seven generations ago - the salacious 18th century sugar baron, George Hyde Park.
Hyde Park's plantations were in the parish of Trelawny, home of Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt.
Coe's ancestor owned 297 slaves who were listed as inventory, all valued at 700,000 pounds in today's currency.
He fathered a daughter with the slave, Sarah Lee. His daughter, Elizabeth Lee Clarke was listed as a beneficiary in his will.
Lord Coe is the descendant of an illegitimate offspring, Hyde John Clarke.
Lord Coe's family line is rich, it includes a marriage by his maternal grandmother Vera Swan to Sardari Lal of the Punjab which accounts for his Anglo-Indian roots.
Another relative was the lieutenant governor of NY state in 1730 and 1740.
Famous Hyde Hall in upstate NY was his family's seat and is now a museum. A town in Cheshire is named for his family.
His grandmother had always told him of their long line of minor aristocrats, quite grand, he wishes he had listened to her then.

Audrey Hepburn is an icon of the sylph-like body but she suffered through poor health and malnutrition during her young life. New science in epigenetics proposes her body was fundamentally altered by starvation during her life in Nazi occupied Netherlands - it is the link between poor diet and genetic disruption.
November 1944 to May 1945 recalled in Dutch history as "the hunger winter" when Germans occupied their country and blockaded her area causing mass malnutrician and the deaths of 18,000.
The daughter of a Dutch Baroness and an English Banker, she watched her brother be dragged away to labour camp and her uncle and cousin executed. She ate tulips and grass. And spent the final years of the war hiding from Nazis in a cellar.

What's Wrong WIth OUr WOrld?
What Can We DO About It?
Science has uncovered elements that undermine everything we have been told about how the world works and how we work.
We are inter-connected to each other at a fundamental level.
The basis of creation is cooperation and democracy - its in our DNA.
A profound discovery in physics proves that what we do at an individual level does affect the global environment.
We are geared at the primoridal level to feel what the other person feels.
We are born to be our brothers keeper - its the way we were wired.
This is the emerging story - we are far grander than we have been told.
What's right with the world - the shift is about to hit the fan.

that when it manifests
your hate causes so much heartbreak...
Anders Behring Breivik - that is unfortunately, you.
We celebrate our differences because it matters
We celebrate our differences because it heals
because it frees
from bigotry, nonsense, ignorance, pain
it frees us of hate
Matters not how far within we reach to wrought hate on another
in the face of hate we will love each other
Love will heal us and free us
of you
We send only love for our brave and peaceful
fellow beings in Norway
because they know the way of peace and they walk in love
and they show us that love heals hate
Our love heals your hate
to all those who see and know the struggles of the world and bravely seek change
and stand in the gap
for those they do not know
but love and defend them
everyday.

Nazis were social climbers

Nazis were not evil, they were 'social climbers.'
That extraordinary utterance of Gotz Aly an esteemed German historian and social commentator is explained as a peculiar German inferiority complex fused with a lust to just 'get on' that created a collective moral collapse.
Social climbing gone berserk and a distant knowledge of the extermination camps led to the plunder of Jews with little remorse of conscience.
The central thesis of Why the Germans? Why the Jews? is that the Holocaust happened because 'people like you and me allowed it to happen' - and it can happen again. Middle class fear of losing face after defeat in the first world war, hyper-inflation and jobless Weimar years blinded people and they wilfully ignored Nazi excesses as they promised the return of German greatness. Hitler declared the culprits to pay the greatest price should be the Jews who had orchestrated the war.
Social climbimg in the jobless, moneyless Weimar Republic was quite impossible for people obsessed with uniforms and symbolism - the Nazis brought back those glory days that led to tragic plunder in the form of massive auctions for the lifespan of the Reich in cities where Jewish belongings were stolen. Regularly large ships with furniture, silver, furs, tapestries, rugs, glassware and more, all stolen from their victims sailed into their ports from occupied countries.
The Social Democrats and Trade Unions wanted property too - the Jews were the bad ones and everyone felt absolved of guilt, blamed for taking all the jobs, the Nazis omitted that the Jews since 1900 had excelled in schools and universities graduating at a rate of eight Jews to one Christian. Lucrative careers in law and medicine only fed German envy.
A further complication - the Germans' deep rooted fear of true freedom which had not existed under the Kaiser meant the democratic Weimar Republic weakened them completely. The Nazis were the catchall for socially envious people suffering an inferiority complex. National inferiority substantially self conditioned Germans for the murder of the Jews.
"The Holocaust can repeat itself. One should not believe the anti-Semites of yesterday are completely different human beings to the ones today."
AGREED.

A statuesque brunette struts down a Florence street in Italy clutching a shawl while men watch longingly is an iconic 1951 image
Eighty-three year old Ninalee Craig was a carefree 23 year old who had ditched her NY city job for a third class ticket on a ship bound for Europe. For six months she roamed France, Spain and Italy on her own - few ladies were so brave in the years following the second world war.

Odyssey into ancestry.
"It will be good. One must always have faith."
To an old Jewish cemetary in the tsarist-era Pale of Settlement for the Jews of Kiev where there is a memorial for an ancester, a nineteenth century Maggid, Mordechai of Chernobyl.
Next to a 1000 year old Bessarabian fortress city near the Dniester River on the outskirts of Khotyn where a 30 foot concrete slab with the names of 45 men, women and children includes a paternal grandfather, who was a holy rabbi and his son Aaron, all etched in Hebrew - it is one of three mass graves of some 1900 Jews killed in the early years of the Holocaust.
The story born in 1941 survived five labour camps before arriving at Ellis Island with the author's father, who also became a rabbi.
The story begins with the Soviet occupation of Bessarabia and northern Bukovina which the Nazi-Soviet pact allowed Stalin to detach from Romania. The Romanian army withdrew then re-invaded with German mobile SS killing units, the Einsatzgruppen, to rape, torture and murder the thriving Jewish population - 23,000 were deported from Khotyn to Transnistria, an occupied zone.
For three weeks from July to August in 1941, 50,000 were murdered - 280,000 to 380,000 died in Bessarabia and Bukovina in the war aided by an anti-Semitic Romanian government. Collaborators included Romanians and Ukrainians - the Romanian and German armies gathered all the Jews singling out their leaders. Testimony at a war crimes tribunal in Bucharest in 1945 recalled Jewish leaders including doctors, lawyers, teachers, scribes, pharmacists and butchers marched down the Dniester to a point where hundreds of Jews were shot. Twerskey's grandfather broke the line to spiritually cleanse in the water and was pulled back and beaten by soldiers.
The Jews dug their own graves.

Valentine's Day 1900 spurned a tale of the mysterious disappearance of three girls, one later found, and their teacher who were apparent victims of a supernatural and mythical event.
Is this story true?
The mystery of its veracity also lingers because there are no archived articles to explore in this enduring disappearance of innocence.

Did you know that the New York Curb Market, located in a section of the old Stock Exchange building was establised in the mid-nineteenth century to trade stocks that fell below the standards of the New York Stock Exchange, it was a haven for shady characters who actually operated on the street, trading was a cacophony of yelling voices through windows onto the street and back.
In 1910 the informal Curb Association determined to weed out crooked players and move operations indoors. In 1931 the building at 86 Trinity Place was rebuilt and in 1953 the operation was renamed the American Stock Exchange.

She was America's sweetheart 50 years ago.
Bet you didn't know Doris Day is still the number one female box office star of all time - for four years in a row.
Cover girl of movie magazines in the 1950s and 60s.
She made 39 films - her co-stars were A-list leading men only.
Then one day she stopped being Doris Day.
Doris Kappelhoff was her given name and after failed marriages and personal betrayal she retired to her reclusive animal rescue ranch and poured her love into some very deserving furry friends. A girl after my heart, after my heart.
How beautiful was the voice!
