Steve Buscemi is the surprise element that makes Boardwalk Empire work.

You may or may not recall he was the "funny looken guy" in Fargo with Frances McDormand - also terrific acting.

Nucky Thompson was a little known bad ass of prohibition history when Lucky Luciano and Al Capone were twenty-something baby gangsters.  They all fight to profit off trade of the demon alcohol.

"Nucky is, like many criminals, stunted, his life nothing more than a well furnished but still well worn cage."
