A single train line, the IRT or Interborough Rapid Transit first operated in 1904 from City Hall to 145th Street.  Learn about the Beach Pneumatic, a mini shuttle test train! 

See NY Mayor Seth Low whose popularity was gained due to the support of Mark Twain. 

Mosaic tiling done at the time can still be found at some stations.  Imagine, once upon a time there were no turnstiles.  Subways were plush, cheap alternatives to cabs with a lamp post at entrances whose red, green and yellow lights indicated when a train was running.

An inspired undertaking ... heady times!
