Pesky Ancestry

de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception

Much has been made of Kate Middleton's commoner status and her working class background for generations but there is this little known factum ...

Kate is also descended from an English king, Edward III, through his second son Edmund.  Agnes Gascoigne married the Tudor grandee Sir Thomas Fairfax.  Their children gave rise to two lines of descent - one that produced Kate Middleton and the other Prince William.  This ancient connection going back to the 1500s makes William and Kate 15th cousins.

They also share another common ancestor. Sir Thomas Leighton, a soldier, diplomat and for forty years in the late 16th century, the cut-throat Governor of Jersey.  This connection makes the couple 12th cousins once removed.
