No snow or north pole - the land of Saint Nicholas is a town by the Mediterranean Sea in Turkey.  A 4th century legend of a Christian bishop recalls a patron saint of poor sailors and children who was neither rotund nor secular.  A pious Santa not Coca Cola Santa.


The majority Muslim town of Demre does not celebrate Christmas although thousands of Christians journey there to see the Church of Saint Nicholas.

It is believed the man of legend died in Demre in 343 AD - then known as Myra - the town's people spoke ancient Greek.

Giving to those in need is the lengendary man's enduring legacy ...
