Fashion Icon Queen Victoria

de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception

The tradition of the white wedding dress began with Queen Victoria - symbol of viginity, happiness and innocence.  These days a white dress suggests a first-time-bride rather than a statement of purity.

Ivory is a popular shade for modern brides but before the Queen's signature statement, brides wore coloured robes including black, adorned by gems.

Queen Victoria wed Prince Albert at Chapel Royal of St. James in London in 1840 - the bride wore a white silk gown trimmed with orange blossoms and a veil of lace.  An impractical choice at that time and reserved for women of wealth because a white gown would be worn only once.  Her choice of dress was a definitive statement not lost on ladies of that era.

And the rest is history ...
