First portrait?

A bearded man with curly hair covered by a crown of thorns.  Jesus Christ?  Uncovered among 70 lead codices discovered in a hill cave above the Sea of Galilee.

Five years ago a flood revealed the large capstone that had guarded the cave's entrance and inside, small wall niches held the booklet and other items including metal plates and lead scrolls.  The area is frought with historic virtue - a hotbed of Roman and ancient Jewish ferment before the split of Judaism and Christianity.

The Holy Land - where Israel, Jordan and Syria's Golan Heights meet and miles from Hamat Gader, a religious site for thousands of years - hosted the Essenes, Samaritans, Pharisees, Sadducees, Dositheans and Nazoreans in the period when the codices were created.
