The Town That War Built

de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception

Roppongi District of Tokyo signalled Japan's post war rejection of nationalist extremism as some embraced liberalism in place of strict conservatism.

Occupying US forces and foreign bureaucrats settled there because of its proximity to the Emperor's palace and the Diet.  Predictably it became the main stay of entertainment, illicit and otherwise.

In 1954 the first American style pizza restaurant arrived and changed Roppongi for good.  The bistro's night crowd encouraged the creation of other night spots.  Eventually the fashionable crowd ensured Roppongi's night life reputation.

Long known for its debauchery and crime - the district born of its post war military camp days was shaped by history.
