Juneteenth - on 19 June 1865 Union General Gordon Granger ordered the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas that had been signed by President Abraham Lincoln and freed the slaves unconditionally.
The Proclamation was law in 1863 but took 30 months for word to reach Texas. Juneteenth is celebrated as a State holiday in Texas having been officially recognized in 1979.
