Grey Gardens

de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception

Fascinating and intimately relevant - a docu-film on the mother daughter tag team of Edith Bouvier Beale and little Edie Beale.  Women of renowned beauty and lives of unparalleled promise - they were the girls who had everything.  Born into wealth at the pinnacle of New York society, their story is a consternating tale of disintegration and loss.  They were both the Aunt and first cousin of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis and her sister Lee Radziwill.

They remained stoicly stubborn as it all slipped away, bending not at all to society's way.  Never underestimate a staunch woman's unwillingness to yield.

Knowing similar tales in my own family I do understand these women though the tragedy is always palpable.

The cult classic queens who kept it real within their own resistance to what was true in reality.

Drew Barrymore is Edith Beale - debutante daughter
In 2009 Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore played these two indomitable characters to perfection in an HBO production - HBO always the best.

The Maysles brothers filmed them in 1975 in their overrun feline habitat for a home and an attic of racoons, it is a cacaphony of singing and arguing and a remarkable journey in time - you cannot help considering always what could have been.  Little Eddie's life is a reminder to always pursue our dreams and not live regretting opportunities never taken - she was the star of her debutante year, proposed to by billionaires and royalty alike who were cast aside for a career in show business never realised.
