Saint Jerome

de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception

Gian Lorenzo Bernini (Italian, 1598–1680) | Saint Jerome | Collezione Chigi-Saracini, Siena

To visualize lifesize or colossal marbles, the great Roman Baroque sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini began by making small, spirited clay models. Fired as terracotta, these studies and related drawings preserve the first traces of the thought process that evolved into some of the most famous statuary in Rome on view in the exhibition “Bernini: Sculpting in Clay.” http://met.org/S9BXeH
