Historic Bibles in Inauguration

de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception

Bibles used by former President Abraham Lincoln and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. have been selected for President Barack Obama's public swearing-in, the President Inaugural Committee announced on Thursday.

“We know our father would be deeply moved to see President Obama take the Oath of Office using his bible,” King’s children said Thursday in the release sent out by the committee.
King's "traveling bible" and the bible used by Lincoln for his first inauguration will be used for the Jan. 21 ceremony, which falls on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the civil rights movement.

The Robinson family bible—a gift from first lady Michelle Obama's father to his mother—will be used during the private official ceremony on Jan. 20.
