The Bakers

de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception

On this day, 115 years ago, a Black man and his family of 7 were attacked because local Whites did not agree that Frazier Baker deserved to be the town's postmaster.

His house was set afire and an angry mob killed him and his infant daughter as they tried to escape. Just as tragic would be the eventual deaths of his remaining children from tuberculosis.

The Baker family would received justice for their losses.

This must be one of the saddest stories I've seen in a long time: On this day, 115 years ago, a Black man and his family of 7 were attacked. Why? Because local Whites didn't think Frazier Baker (his family is pictured below a year after the murders) deserved to be the town's postmaster. What ended up happening was unspeakable. His house was set on fire and an angry mob made sure to kill him and his infant daughter as they tried to escape. Just as tragic would be the eventual deaths of his remaining children from tuberculosis. The Baker family would never find justice for their losses. NewsOne remembers this family's horrid story here:
