Alexander Edgar, Esq.

Alexander Edgar, Esq. ( 1750-1820), Scottish Landowner and Jamaican Planter, of Auchingramont, Lanarkshire, Scotland, and of Wedderly Estate and Armagh Estate, Trelawny and Newman Hall Estate, St. James, Jamaica. He was a younger son of Alexander Edgar, Esq. of Auchingramont, Lanarkshire, Scotland, by his Margaret Edgar, the daughter of James Edgar, Esq. He left Scotalnd and went out to Jamaica as a young man where he made a large fortune as a Planting-Attorney managing the Plantations of the Haughton-Clarke family and other Absentee Proprietors. In July, 1797 he married Anne Gordon, the daughter of Henry Gordon, Esq. of Lancaster Estate and Braco Estate, Trelawny, by his wife Rachel Lawrence, the grand-daughter of John Lawrence, Esq. of of Fairfield Estate, St. James. Alexander Edgar and Anne Gordon had 11 children. Their third daughter, Mary Edgar (1802-1831), married in 1822 Dr. James Henry Archer, M.D. of Spring Mount Estate, St. Ann, and their fourth daughter, Eliza Edgar, married in 1825 George Archer, Esq. of Great Pond Estate, St. Ann. Another daughter, Louisa Edgar, married in 1832 Samuel John Jackson, Esq. (1808-18??), son of the Hon. Samuel Jackson of Catherine Hall Estate, St. James.
