12 April 1555: THE DEATH of Juana of Castile. The daughter of Ferdinand and Isabel, was the first Queen Regnant to reign over the Kingdoms of Castile (1504–55) and Aragon (1516–55), a union which evolved into modern Spain. She was the last monarch of the House of Trastámara and her marriage to Philip of Burgundy created the Habsburg rule of Spain. Like her mother before her, she fought for her crown but unlike her mother, she was unsuccessful in holding onto her power, and her father, husband, and son took advantage of her. To gain full power, her son confined her to a convent. Juana died on Good Friday, 12 April 1555 at age 75 in the Convent of Santa Clara at Tordesillas.
