Ancient Faces

de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception

This is my maternal Great Grandfather Jacob Henry Sapp (1846-1908) he and his younger brother William enlisted in the 1st New Jersey Volunteers in 1864, Willie was 13 and enlisted as a drummer. Their first battle was before Petersburg Va. Willie was wounded early on and Jacob took a mini ball later in the battle. Willie's leg was amputated in the field and was transported to a hospital in Washington D.C. where he died. The surgeons could not remove the ball from Jacob and he was mustered out in 1865. the ball remained in his body and caused his death 44 years later in 1908.
Willie's body was buried temporarily at Arlington House which had just 2 months before be made a military cemetery. The temporary markers got knocked down and mixed up and many remains were lost. We believe that Willie is one of the 2,111 unknown Civil War soldiers reburied in the former rose garden at Arlington National Cemetery.
