Kentucky Derby History

de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception

Horse jockey Kevin Krigger, a U.S. Virgin Islands native will become the second Black jockey to compete in the Kentucky Derby this Sunday since 1921 and the first to represent his birthplace.

Before 1921 Blacks dominated the derby as winners from 1875 to 1902. By 1921, Whites decided to ban Blacks from the competition, relegated to groomers and trainers.

And Rosie Napravnik is not worried about history. She knows that will take care of itself and to hedge her chances, the 25-year-old jockey is focusing her chemistry on her longshot, Mylute, in Saturday's Kentucky Derby. sShe plans to achieve what six women, including herself, have failed to do in 138 Derbys against male jockeys.

Two years after achieving the best finish by a female jockey in the Derby, she will try to become the first woman to win it. Napravnik's pursuit of the milestone comes a year after she became the first female rider to win the Kentucky Oaks, the second-biggest race on Churchill Downs' marquee weekend.
