Texas was an independent country then. Spanish conquistadors (conquerors) first arrived in the region now known as Texas in 1519, finding the region populated by various Native American tribes. During the period from 1519 to 1848, all or parts of Texas were claimed by six countries: France, Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the United States of America—as well as the Confederate States of America in 1861–65." The Republic of Texas existed for a relatively short portion of that period...1836 to 1845.
 
The first Congress of the Republic of Texas convened in October 1836 at Columbia... (now West Columbia). Stephen F.
