de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception
The
toilet paper is taken for granted these days but it is a precious
commodity.
It was invented by a paper maker Joseph Gayetty in 1857 but was made widely available in the 1920’s due to patent
complications.
Original advertisements for the product used the tagline, “The greatest
necessity of the age” as if the human race had not been functioning without
toilet paper for all millennia.
It was followed with “Gayetty’s
medicated paper for the water-closet.”
